OCEAN- WHY DO we LIKE it?         6-2-16
(Italian:) IL MARE- Perche' ci Piace?
Let's take a look and find out in more details.  Scopriamolo insieme con piu' attenzione.
In this large post you'll learn about the ocean, how it SUSTAINS life- hence how it helps us live on Earth- but also how we're polluting it with plastic trash and other threats

and hopefully how we can help save it. You will also learn about the Voyage of The Plastiki- the boat made of 12,000 plastic bottles and sailed the Pacific in 2012!

Introduction - what's this about? / Introduzione di che si tratta?
OCEANS are BEAUTIFUL and ESSENTIAL (very important) FOR our LIFE on Earth, BUT they are at RISK, they are...IN DANGER because of trash, pollution (smog, dirt, trash, poison), which is mostly made up of plastic trash, abandoned fishing nets and CO2 (carbon, smog, air pollution), micro-plastics and sewer waste.  However, we can help! If we all work together! Then, let's all work together to save our oceans!

Introduzione
Incominciamo subito!

A. How the Ocean Sustains (supports, helps) Life on earth

FACT # 1. THE OCEAN IS THE SOURCE OF ALL WATER... ON EARTH!

The water starts in the ocean, it evaporates, forms into clouds and then it comes down as rain, snow or ice. And it finally floats back into the ocean and carrying salt and minerals.

FACT # 2 The ocean effects (regulates, controls) the weather. It cools the land and the air in the summer, and warms up the land and the air in the winter.

FATTORE n. 2- Il mare regola il tempo. D'inverno riscalda l'aria e la terra, e d'estate li rinfresca.

FACT # 3 - The oceans provide the vast majority of from the oxygen on earth, from  60-70%!

FACT # 4- The ocean is full of life! Many animals live in it!
FATTORE n. 4 - Il mare e' pieno di vita! Di tanti animali!
Dolphins are beautiful, smart and playful mammals!
Come noi!

WHALES are also mammals.
Le balene sono anche mammali.

They can swim and breech... jump out of the water!
Possono nuotare...ma anche saltare dall'acqua!

I'm a baby seal! Please, be kind and considerate! Do not pollute the ocean! It's my home! Don't throw your plastic in it.
Plastic trash can kill me!

FACT  # 5 - Millions of birds live on the oceans!

Can this bird, a seagull, open a clam and eat it?
Come puo' quest'uccello, un gabbiano, aprire una conchiglia?

Simple! He picks it up with its beak, flies up high and drops on a concrete sidewalk and/or rocks!
"Hoops! I hope I don't hit that guy on his head!"

Semplice! Stai attento! Testone!

Yeah! Don't throw junk, plastic trash in the water! Because it always ends up in the ocean, in addition to polluting/poisoning our drinking water and poisoning the land that feeds us! So, please, no trash in my water! because I'll eat it!... And then ... I'll eat you too! Too bad I can't chew you up into tiny pieces! Because I have no teeth! I Ate too much plastic... and lost of them!
Perdono i denti! Ridi!

Why are you laughing? I don't look funny!... Do I?
Perche' ridi? Porca miseria!

Hey guys!! It's nice and clean here!
No plastic trash...yet!

Why do you laugh at me?
I'm not fat! I just swallowed some food!
Hoops! I hope it wasn't a plastic bottle?
Perche' ridi? Non sono grasso! Ho appena ingoiato qualcosa!
Spero non sia plastica!

My name is Pinocchio. I come form a family of really long nosed fish! Not because we tell lies, but because we're nosy! We stick our noses everywhere! Do you know someone like me?
Conosci a qualcuno come me?

I'm hungry, but i don't like plastic! to tell you the truth...
I eat it when no one is watching!

What am I? A sea snail? Or a seahorse?

Starfish / Stella marina
I just like to sleep! I have no time and I'm not hungry!
Thanks anyway!
A me piace solo dormire! Non ho tempo ne voglia di plastic! Grazie lo stesso!

FACT # 6-THE OCEANS ARE A MAJOR SOURCE OF LIFE! We get food, water, oxygen (the air we breathe), beauty and LOTS OF fun things to do! And fishermen make a living from the ocean. They catch the fish, they sell it and make money from fishing.

Sometimes they catch too many fish!  And now the oceans are becoming empty!
A volte pescano troppi pesci! E ora il mare si sta' svuotando!

FACT # 7 - People have fun on the ocean. They Windsurf! And many other fun things, like...

People go to the beach; they sunbathe, swim, look at the beautiful bodies... and even the not so beautiful!
You could go scuba diving, they go underwater to look at the fish  and the marine (sea) plants.
And they may even see an octopus!
Or a friendly dolphin calling out to you to play...
or to ask you for food!!

Or you may see a sea turtle swimming by!
Or a tiny sea horse galloping... swimming by.
Or mean sharks with sharp teeth and a big appetite! Very hungry! Watch out!! Stay at a safe distance!
Attenti!! State ben lontani!

FACT # 8 - THE OCEAN IS A HIGHWAY for  many vessels (ships, boats and submarines).

Below; a cruise ship, a cargo ship and a submarine, or sub.

FACT 9 - The Oceans are full of salt! Rainwater carries nutrients and salt for rocks and the ground to the ocean.

FACT # 10- THE OCEANS ARE POLLUTED! Scientists think that there is more plastic in the ocean, than plankton, the food that many fish eat.

FATTORE n. 10 - I NOSTRI MARI SONO INQUINATI!

D. THIS IS HOW WE CAN SAVE THE OCEANS; APPLY THE 4Rs
ECCO COME POSSIAMO SALVARE IL MARE- APPLICARE LE 4Rs

These marine biologists, below, study and help marine animals to survive.
Ecco come i biologhi marini aiutano il mare.

FACT # 8 - WE CAN SAVE THE OCEANs- Putting into action the 7Rs...actions that protect mother nature- but we must do this right away- now- and all the time 24/7- at home, at work, and everywhere, 24/7, in order to reduce waste/pollution.

The 4Rs are:
1. Reduce products and use of energy (that's our carbon/product footprint).

2. Reuse all the products/items we have- before recycling/discarding them. We can make new things (for example, plastic bottles can be filled with dirt and used as building materials, sculptures/artwork, etc.)

3. Recycle all plastic that we can (those that are labeled # 1 to # 7 can be recycled- please do it! Straws, silverware, and dirty bags cannot be recycled! That's why we must not buy/use them!

4. Refuse- means saying no to plastic/Styrofoam single use-items, and/or boycott-stop purchasing/using all kinds of single-use/Styrofoam products. Items like; synthetic clothes (e.g. made from polyester fibers), plastic bags, bottles, cups, straws, stirrers, swabs (aka q-tips), and disposable products, such as cigarette lighters, markers, disposable razors, etc. We can replace all of these with ones that are degradable or natural; made from natural materials, such as fibers (paper, wood, cotton, and wool) and food- such as edible cutlery/silverware, dishes, etc.).

We must start to talk to/involve our local municipalities, in addition to schools, libraries, hospitals, city hall, businesses, county/state offices, etc. ), and kindly demand that they improve the waste collection system to reduce plastic pollution and other harmful waste from reaching the environment.

We must also contact political leaders at the State and federal government, and demand that they do all they fund environmental programs/infrastructure aimed at reducing harmful waste/pollution, and if need be pass new regulations/laws, which will protect the planet from the threat of plastic trash and all other types of pollution that are mentioned above, and threaten our existence on planet Earth- our only home.

TRANSFORM OUR ECONOMY- FROM A LINEAR ONE- TO A CIRCULAR ONE!

The circular economy can save the climate: Italy first in Europe

Italy is the leader of the circular economy in the top five European economies

By Editorial Board March 24, 2021

There can only be an ecological transition with a circular economy. And the possibility of avoiding a climate catastrophe, by honoring the 2050 commitments made at the UN summit in Paris in 2015, is linked to the relaunch of the circular economy on which 39% of CO2 cuts depend. But to achieve this goal it is necessary, on a global level, to double the current rate of circularity of goods from 8.6% to 17%. It is a challenge that sees Italy at the forefront: for the third consecutive year, our country is in the lead in the comparison of circularity between the five main economies of the European Union (Germany, France, Italy, Spain, and Poland, which with the UK’s exit from the EU is the 5th economy).

  The 4R sono le seguenti:

Discarded fishing nets destroy ocean life, corrals and animals.

E infine, mettiamo in azione subito, ora!

These are corrals- they are beautiful marine plants that make oxygen and provide a habitat (living place for many sea creatures (animals). Unfortunately, discarded fishing nets, that are thrown away by many fishermen (who think they're smart/efficient), but in actuality they are simply selfish, deficient (not smart)! Because their abandoned (thrown away) fishing nets cause a lot of damage. They rip corral heads and kill marine life. Turtles, dolphins and seals get stuck in them and die from drowning  because they can't breathe- since they are mammals, animals that have lungs like us). So they die from lack of oxygen and/or starvation, since they are trapped and can't get any food! Simply sad!
So, let's do something positive! Let's write and inform everyone,  our friends/families, the media, and our political leaders, and fishermen. Let's explain this problems, and other marine threats (dangers) to our oceans, and to our planet! We must ask our leaders to protect sea life and our oceans! Let's tell/inform fishermen not to discard their old broken fishing nets into the sea! Because this destroys their livelihood!
And finally, let's take action now! Start now! and as a minimum begin applying the 4Rs; Recycle, Reuse, Reduce and Refuse (say no to plastic bags when they are offered to you at in stores, and reduce and recycle all plastics; bottles, and other plastic food containers. One easy way to do this is to get recycling containers (in your home and your workplace); for paper, plastic, glass and metals (e.g., soda cans and bottles)
We cam also avoid and/or boycott (stop using plastic bags, and other use-only-once plastics, like bottles, plastic cups, lids, straws, stirrers, etc.) and re-use/recycle all other plastic.
We must do this now, because scientists predict that within 2 generations (our grandchildren) the ocean may collapse, or die! So, we must do it also for our children, and our beautiful planet earth- our only home in this vast universe!

Why do you laugh? Do I look like a balloon? That's because I drank too much water...or maybe BECAUSE I ate too much plastic!?!
Help! I'm going to blow up!
Perche ridi? Ti sembro un palloncino? Forse ho bevuto troppa acqua, o forse ho mangiato troppo...plastic!
Aiuto! Sto' scoppiando!

E. OTHER SOLUTIONS by other Countries
In May 2017, the German government approved a new packaging law which aims to improve the existing ordinance on packaging by focusing on recycling and prevention of packaging waste. The recycling targets for the different packaging materials will be increased, reaching 63% for plastic and 90% for metal, glass, and paper and board by 2022. Further, there shall be incentives for packaging producers to incorporate recyclability considerations in packaging design. In addition, reusable packaging will be promoted, aiming to reach a target of 70% reusable beverage packaging. According to the German Minister for the Environment, Barbara Hendricks, the new packaging law is an important step in the further development of the circular economy. E. The Voyage of The Plastiki- A Sailboat made of plastic - including 12,000 plastic bottles!

By reading about Plastiki's adventure how I learned about plastic pollution in the ocean.

In 2012, Plastiki traveled from San Francisco to Sydney Australia. Why? To show us the condition of the ocean.
Nell'estate del 2012 Plastiki salpo' l'Oceano Atlantico, da San Francisco, negli USA, a Sydney, nell'Australia.
Perche'? Per mostrarci la condizione dell'oceano.

This is David with his boat. He is the designer who came up with the idea of Plastiki.

David and the Plastiki's crew.
Davide con la sua squadra/team.

SO, WHY DID THIS CREW RISK THEIR LIFE CROSSING THE PACIFIC OCEAN?
Answer: TO RAISE AWARENESS and TELL THE WHOLE WORLD ABOUT PLASTIC TRASH IN THE OCEAN! AND THAT WE all NEED TO DO SOMETHING TO STOP THE POLLUTION OF THE OCEANS.

This is an adventure documentary shot on more than 20 locations over the past 4 years. Explorers Craig Leeson (also a journalist) and Tanya Streeter (an Olympic world champion deep-sea diver and world champion), and a team of international scientists reveal the causes and consequences of plastic pollution and share solutions. An interesting and educational film that presents the problem of ocean plastic pollution beautifully. It also offers hope/solutions, hence it will motivate you to act. In fact, after watching it, I finally understood why we often see whales dying on beaches worldwide. To take action join the global movement at www.plasticoceans.org
