I related to this film, by Salvatore Stabile, because my family and I lived through a similar situation in the 1990's- when I had difficulty finding employment. Today poverty in the USA is still- unfortunately- a reality that touches way too many people in our society. If you think that poverty is fiction (not real), this i story will change your mind and heart about it. In fact, finding yourself without a job, and without family's support to help you, can be devastating. However, the only thing that will keep you sane- that will sustain you- and keep your family together is your faithand the love for each other. I understand it- I know it- because I experienced it- I went through it. I was without a job.
At the time, in the mid 90s, my wife didn't speak English, in addition we had a small child. We found ourselves out of luck with no family support- no one to help us, since we were living here (in the USA), so we were away from our family in Italy. And in case you wonder about our status- don't worry- we're not illegal! We are naturalized Americans. Watch this movie with your family because it will show you the power of determination and love for one another in though times. This is the story of "Frank Diaz (played by John Leguizamo- a great actor), an unemployed boxer, and his family live in a homeless shelter for months when, on Christmas Eve, word comes that an apartment may be available. The catch is that Frank must have a job before the end of the day. So he hits the cold streets of New York, his resentful stepson (David Castro) in tow, to find a job so that his family can have a real home for Christmas morning. Film: WHERE GOD LEFT HIS SHOES / DOVE DIO LASCIO' LE SCARPE. Una storia che capita a molti negli Stati Uniti (con quasi 50 milioni di poveri) e anche in Italia. Una storia che ho vissuto anchio! E' stata dura, ma ho capito tante cose e imparato una lezione importante.
Gli eventi di questo film mi hanno fatto ricordare la realta', che a volte puo' essere dura e spietata. Questo film di Salvatore Stabile e' la realta' dei fatti purtroppo di molte famiglie. Non dico balle, perché io personalmente ci sono passato. Io, con la mia famiglia, qui negli USA, abbiamo vissuto una situazione simile negli anni 90, quando avevo difficoltà a trovare lavoro.
Si, ancora oggi la povertà negli Stati Uniti è dilagante- purtroppo, una realtà che tocca troppo molte persone nella nostra società. Se qualcuno pensa che la povertà è finzione, che non e' realta, quel qualcuno vive nel paese delle meraviglie, o meglio nel paese dei balocchi, della lussuria!
Questo film, è una storia che cambierà la vostra mente e il vostro cuore se pensate che la poverta' non esiste. Trovarsi senza un lavoro e senza il sostegno della famiglia...può essere devastante.
Tuttavia, l'unica cosa che ci tiene sani di mente in situazioni del genere, e' il sostegno dei nostri cari- questo ci aiutera' a mantenere la famiglia insieme- un'altro sostegno importante sara' la nostra fede, e l'amore per la nostra famigli. Io l'ho capito, l'ho imparato perche' ho fatto quest'esperienza. Io e mia moglie (durante la metà degli anni '90), ci siamo trovati senza lavoro. Inoltre avevamo una bambina piccola di pochi anni, e mia moglie non poteva lavorare e aiutarmi perche' ancora non parlava l'inglese. Vivevamo qui (negli Stati Uniti), quindi lontani dall'appoggio dalla nostra famiglia e dei parenti, che sono quasi tutti in Italia. Guardatevi questo film con la vostra famiglia, perché vi mostrerà il potere della determinazione e dll'affetto familiare, che e' necessario durante i periodi di prova come quando si perde il lavoro, essere soli e non perdere la speranza e la dignita'.

Quale lezione ho imparato dall'esperienza della disoccupazione? Che devi reaggire, devi fare qualcosa. Io, grazie a Dio l'ho fatto. Mi sono dedicato al volontariato e alla preghiera- ogni giorno mi raccomandavo a Dio. E Dio non mi abbandono'. Quando mi trovai senza lavoro (in diverse occasioni, 3 volte, e 6 per mesi di seguito), chiesi al parroco della mia parrocchia se mi avrebbe fatto restaurare alcune statue della nostra chiesa, che erano in pessime condizioni. Allora passai l'estate del 1993 fuori la chiesa di San Antonio di Schenectday, vicino Albany (la capitale dello Stato di NY). Li restaurai due statue, la Madonna di Lourdes e la Pieta', entrambi si trovano fuori della chiesa. Dopo un'anno o due, quando l'unica alternativa era il welfare (l'assistenza sociale) perche' dopo 6 mesi di disoccupazione fini la mia cassa integrazione (the unemployment checks stopped). L'indomani trovai subito un lavoro provvisorio in un grande delicatessen (salumeria) che mi salvo' dall'assistenza sociale (the welfare). Nel 1997 mi iscrissi di nuovo all'universita' per cambiare carriera. Da disegnatore techinico/graphico disoccupato, volevo diventare maestro d'inglese. Grazie a Dio i lavori provvisori, nella salumeria, nei ristoranti, e anche da cuoco in una casa di riposo mi durarono fino al 2000, per 7 anni! Pensate che non mi potevo permettere l'assicurazione medica (health insurance) per me e mia moglie. Mia figlia era assicurata perche' era una bambina, e lo Stato di NY grazie a Dio, ha provveduto per lei. Dopo nel 2001 completai i mie studi di maestro, e arrivai all laurea di Master in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of other Languages/ Insegnante d'inglese per studenti di altre lingue) all'Universita' di Albany. Insegno dal 2001, gia da 15 anni.
Da quest'esperienza ho imparato tante cose, che con la fede in te stesso, la determinazione (perseverance) con l'appoggio (l'affetto, il sostegno morale e fisico, con il lavoro e l'auto della consorte , la moglie o il marito) della famiglia c'e la puoi fare. Ma un'altra cosa anch'essa grande per me, e' la fede in Dio, perche' nei momenti di debolezza o di solitudine, trovi a Lui- a Gesu' che fa' sentire la Sua Presenza...una cosa che mi danno coraggio a continuare, anche nella difficolta'- nella battaglia della vita. Sia lodato Gesu' Cristo, e Sua Madre Maria- Lei quella che mi ha guidato e protetto, anche quando dubitavo dei suoi messaggi di Medjugorje. (c) Ottavio Lo Piccolo, 2016.

UNBROKEN a great film by Angelina Jolie - Based on a True Story of An Italian American Hero, an athlete and later a prisoner of war. I enjoyed this movie. A great story of strength, character, hope and resilience.

MY ALLEGIANCE ISN'T TO ANY POLITICAL PARTY AND/OR IDEOLOGY, BUT ONLY TO GOD, FAMILY AND COUNTRY. An answer to those who criticize my citizenship status, my political views/ideas/values.
I am not for illegal immigration, and/or lawlessness, in fact I have been a naturalized citizen for over 40 years, been in the US military for more than 35, a husband and father of two, an artist, a writer, a teacher, and a patriot. I do not pledge allegiance to any political party and/or ideology, I pledge my allegiance in God, family, country and faithful/honest friends, colleagues and or leaders.
I am an independent because I have voted for both US parties, both democrats and republicans, however, since after George W Bush presidency, I have lost my faith/hope in the Republican Party, because they have lied, deceived the American people, and facts show that only care about their own interests and that of rich and corporations. In short, republicans don't care about the middle class.As a matter of fact, they always say that they want to shrink government, but then they turn around and they tell us that they want to increase defense spending! They also deny the effects of global warming, when the whole world's scientific community has proved that it is caused by fossil fuels.
And finally republicans shot down the government many times, denying workers their pay, while they get paid and get all their benefits, and the federal workers get jack shit! Republicans also are quick and always willing to cut social programs for the middle class and the poor, they want to cut Medicare, social security and education! As a Christian they also disappoint me because they stall all legislation that is aimed at making our life better, they block anything that Pr. Obama wants to do.
Yes, Obama, isn't perfect, but he has done a lot better than the previous President Bush. Republicans say they are for family values, but do not help families, and they do not help the unborn because abortion numbers don't change, they only talk but do not change laws.
The list could go on forever, hence I stop here and must reiterate
again- make clear- that I will never vote for any politician who isn't
honest, intelligent and caring. In addition, I will never support
leaders who preach hatred, violence and xenophobia (fear),
leaders/politicians that aren't for the middle class, for legal
immigrants and the poor.
In conclusion, I will never support an
ignorant politician who tells lies, doesn't follow/breaks the Constitution, makes fun of immigrants, offends them and
incites, and deceives people. In other words I will never support a
leader who works only the rich and the corporations. i will vote for a
leader who tries his best to do what's right for all citizens, the
middle class, the rich and poor too.
