| Climate Change 2023: Synthesis Report
More than a century of burning
fossil fuels as well as unequal and unsustainable energy and land use have led
to global warming of 1.1°C above pre-industrial levels. This has resulted in
more frequent and more intense extreme weather events that have caused
increasingly dangerous impacts on nature and people in every region of the
world. But there are multiple, feasible, and effective options to reduce
greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to human-caused climate change, and they are
available now, said scientists in this IPCC report. Taking effective and
equitable climate action will not only reduce losses and damages for nature and
people, but it will also provide wider benefits, but the report also points out,
underscoring the urgency of taking more ambitious action now to secure a
livable sustainable future for all.

C. 25 ACTIONS THAT WE CAN TAKE TO REDUCE OUR
WASTE & PLASTIC POLLUTION FOOTPRINT, and SAVE OUR PLANET
1. Act: take concrete actions, be responsible, and start by applying the 4Rs in our homes, at work,
in our classrooms/schools, and everywhere!! And become a role model- a P.O.P.E.-
a Protector Of Planet Earth! Be an inspiration and a
resourceful person who is dedicated to the Earth’s sustainability and health! The
4Rs are 4 environmental actions: Reducing, Reusing, Refusing (say no- do not use- boycott), and
Recycling. Begin
recycling paper, cardboard, and all other recyclable materials, such as glass,
metal, plastic, and all kinds of containers that have the little triangle and a
number in it (jars, cups, cans, bottles, bowls and more, however, make sure that
they are rinsed and free of liquids/foods (contamination/foreign
items/substances in recycling bins, such as furniture, plastic bags, toys,
straws, plastic silverware, plastic straws, etc., will turn your recycling into
waste since recycling machines get stuck.) We must avoid buying/using single-use and disposable products (razors, straws, lighters, etc.). Therefore it
is very important that we correctly sort/separate recycling materials (redeemable bottles/cans-
must be in their own separate recycling bins if you want to raise funds/money.
Collect all other classroom recyclable items, food containers;
cereal bowls, and juice/yogurt cups, in comingled and/or single-stream
recycling bins.
2. Set up a waste reduction/recycling area in your home and in any other
workplace. You’ll need 4 waste reducing bins; one for trash, one for plastic bags, one for cardboard/paper, and one for commingled or single
stream/ nonrefundable materials (plastic, glass, and metals); these are non-refundable items (no-deposit items; food/soap/laundry
containers, jugs/jars, yogurt/fruit cups, bowls, bottles as iced tea, Gatorade
bottles, juice/milk bottles/jugs, etc.). And one recycling bin for returnable/refundable
bottles/cans. Remember that all recycling materials are clean/dry- or they will be
thrown in the trash!
3. Be kind to all living things by actually doing something to
reflect your kindness, care, and concern for others, the environment, and all
creatures
4. Become a P.O.P.E.! A Protector Of Planet Earth! And encourage others to do too! Lead
them gently, but decisively, with your good example, by applying the 4Rs in
your life; 24/7 everywhere!
5. Celebrate Earth Day (April 22) and World Ocean Day (June 6) in school and at home and treat each day as an
Earth Day! When I drive and/or when I go walking and/or biking I pick up recyclable items
(bottles/cans and plastic cups) and put them in my car’s trunk and/or bike (I have
a recycling box on my bike rack).
6. Save water. Take shorter showers with the WSR method: wet-self-soap up
& rinse). Turn the water off when not needed, for instance when washing your teeth
and/or shaving.
7. Create artworks/art exhibits, writings, and music, and enter contests
8. Take part in a beach/neighborhood/park cleanup. I do it all the time! Except in winter
when the ground is covered in snow.
9. Start a community garden in your neighborhood, your school, etc.
10. Build compost stations in each community garden and invite people to use them, by bringing
their clean/uncontaminated food waste (no plastics and/or chemicals.
11. Watch/discuss documentary movies about the environment
12. Reading/discussing books/magazine
articles, etc.
13. Go on field trips to learn more about the environment and how
to help it
14. Invite a speaker who
is an expert in this topic, etc.
15. Write letters to local/national political & business
leaders and ask them to do more
for the well-being of our Earth’s environment by enforcing legislation across
the board (make businesses and corporations responsible for their waste).
16. Join forces with environmental agencies (Green Peace, Oceana, Sierra Club Foundation, WWF, Earth Justice, etc.- see my list at the bottom of
this post)
17. Enter & Earth and World Ocean Day Contests! At the State and national levels.
18. Join the Clynk Recycling Program with Hannaford Supermarkets (find out how below)
19. Reduce your driving; use public transportation, use your bike
and walk whenever possible.
20. Support local businesses: this reduces CO2 emissions since
products don’t need to be imported and/or transported long distances.
21. Eat fewer red meats, if possible; we can get proteins from many
other sources; beans, nuts, seeds, cereals, and grains (wheat, rice, oats, cornmeal, barley,
such as pasta, pizza, bread, grits, and tortillas)
22. Divest (take out) your investments from banks, companies, and/or
organizations that harm the environment. For instance fossil fuel companies, corporations
and the plastic industries, and/or any other entity that harms the planet
in any way. Others are the defense/weapons industry and companies that
manufacture harmful chemicals, such as herbicides/pesticides.
23. Invest in socially/environmentally
conscientious companies that are sustainable and make sure that their
investments do not hurt the planet
24. Connect to a utility that carries
clean energy. It may be a little more expensive, but in the long
run, prices will come down as more people use it.
25. Purchase an electric vehicle and/or a hybrid one if you can
afford it.
