A Short Summary of Saint Patrick’s Life

Patrick was born about 385 in Scotland. His parents, Calpurnius and Conchessa, were Catholic Romans living in Britain in charge of the colonies. This might even make Saint Patrick an Italian.

Chi era San Patrizio?
Patrizio è nato all'incirca nell'anno 385 nella Scozia. I suoi genitori, Calpurnio e Conchessa, erano cattolici romani che vivevano in Gran Bretagna a capo delle colonie. Questo potrebbe addirittura rendere Saint Patrick un italiano.

His Life. 
At the age of fourteen, raiders (outlaws) captured Patrick and took him as a slave to Ireland, a land of Druids and pagans. Patrick learned the Irish language and customs.While a slave, Patrick's faith in God grew and he wrote: "The love of God and his fear grew in me more and more, as did the faith, and my soul was raised, so that, in a single day, I have said as many as a hundred prayers and in the night, nearly the same. I prayed in the woods and on the mountain, even before dawn. I felt no hurt from the snow or ice or rain." 
 La sua vita.
All'età di quattordici anni, alcuni banditi catturarono Patrizio e lo portarono come schiavo in Irlanda, una terra di druidi e pagani. Patrizio apprese la lingua e le usanze irlandesi. Mentre uno schiavo, la fede di Patrizio in Dio crebbe e scrisse: "L'amore di Dio e la sua paura crebbero sempre più in me, come la fede, e la mia anima fu sollevata, così che, in un solo giorno, ho detto fino a cento preghiere ogni notte. Ho pregato nei boschi e sulla montagna, anche prima dell'alba, ma non ho sentito il freddo della neve, ne dal ghiaccio e ne dalla pioggia."

When Patrick was twenty, he had a dream in which God told him to leave Ireland by going to the coast. He escaped and found a boat that took him back to Britain and his family. 
 Quando Patrizio aveva vent'anni, ha fatto un sogno in cui Dio gli aveva detto di lasciare l'Irlanda per andare sulla costa. Scappò e trovò una barca che lo riportò in Inghilterra e nella sua famiglia.

Later Patrick dreamed that Irish were calling, "We beg you, holy youth, to come and walk among us once more." Patrick studied, became a priest, and, later, a bishop. In 433, he went and took the Gospel to Ireland. Patrick preached the Gospel throughout Ireland, converted thousands, and began building churches.
 Più tardi, Patrizio sognò che gli irlandesi lo chiamavano: "Ti preghiamo, santa gioventù, di venire e camminare di nuovo tra noi". Cosi, Patrizio studiò, divenne prete e, più tardi, vescovo. Nel 433 andò e portò il Vangelo in Irlanda, dove predicò il Vangelo in tutta l'Irlanda, convertì migliaia di persone e iniziò a costruire chiese.

Patrick is famous for using the shamrock (a three-leaf clover) to explain the Trinity. As seen above.
Patrick preached for 40 years and died on March 17, 461 at Saul, where he had built the first church.

How do we celebrate Saint Patrick's today in the USA? 

Saint Patrick's day is a happy day of celebration for Irish people and for Irish immigrants in America. Many cities host (have, organize) parades. 

Come celebriamo il giorno San Patrizio negli Stati Uniti?
Il giorno di San Patrizio è un giorno felice di festa per gli irlandesi e per gli immigrati irlandesi in America. Molte città organizzano sfilate.

For the occasion of Saint Patrick, people like to eat corn beef dinners, which include boiled corned beef, cabbage, carrots and potatoes. Corned beef is a special cured beef (with spices) that is boiled in water with several cans of beer (2-3 ounces each), and other spices. You can purchase corned beef in supermarkets (or butcher shops) in the USA, anytime during this holiday. To make this meal you'll need a large pot to boil the corned beef, and then, in the same water (where the corned beef is cooked), you'll boil the three veggies (vegetables). You should also buy (or make) Irish soda bread, and butter, to spread (put) on the bread, and mustard to put on your corned beef as you eat it. For drink you should have a good beer to finish the trick! It will wash it (the food) down good! Enjoy! Happy Saint Patrick's day to you my friend!

 Per l'occasione di San Patrizio, alla gente piace mangiare cene con un piatto di manzo chiamato cornef beef, che consiste in carne di vitello bollita in acqua, cavoli, carote e patate. La carne è un manzo speciale (con spezie e erbe) che viene bollito in acqua con diverse lattine di birra (1-2 once ciascuna- massomeno di un quarto di litro), e spezie. Si puo' acquistare la carne, il corned beef, nei supermercati (o nei negozi di macelleria) negli Stati Uniti, in qualsiasi momento durante questa festa. Per preparare questo pasto avrai bisogno di una grande pentola per far bollire la carne, e poi, nella stessa acqua (dove viene cucinata la carne), si fanno bollire i 3 vegetali. Dovreste anche comprare (o preparare) il pane irlandese, che si spalma con burro, e la senape per mettere sulla carne man mano che la mangi. Per bere dovresti bere una buona birra! Buon appetito! Felice giorno di San Patrizio a voi tutti amici e parenti!

The  corned beef dinner is a typical Saint Patrick's day meal, it includes cabbage, carrots and potatoes.
La tipica cena  di corned beef, di carne bovina. Questo è un tipico pasto nel giorno di San Patrizio, che include cavoli, carote e patate.

Below: Corned beef sandwich, in addition to the beef it has sauerkraut (cured cabbage in vinegar) and Swiss cheese, on rye bread. You can make it yourself with leftover (extra) corned beef.  
 Sotto: panino con carne di manzo, oltre al manzo ha crauti (cavolo in aceto stagionato) e formaggio svizzero, sul pane di segale. Potete fare questi panini con l'avanzo di carne, all'indomani di San Patrizio!





If you drink beer and/or any other alcohol, please be responsible- do not drink and drive. If you get tips, light headed, and/or drunk, let a friend drive you, or have someone call a cab for you. 
Be safe and be considerate of others too. That's what Patrick would tell you!
