Schenectady Crop Walk for the Hungry.
Walk to fight Hunger and Assist those in need in the USA and the World.
This is a Yearly National Event, sponsored by all US denominations (churches)
 Sunday May 6th, 2018
 Registration 12:30- 1:25
Starts/Ends; Emmanuel Friedens Church, 218 Nott Terrace, Sch’dy.
Ÿ  Walk begins at 1:30 (5Km, optional mile available, runners welcome - not a race)

Dear friends,
I would like to invite you to take part in this event, and if possible, to sponsor me by making a pledge and/or donation.

Every year US churches; from all denominations, sponsor Crop walks, where people of all ages in the USA walk to raise funds and awareness in fighting poverty- here in the US and overseas. I have participated in this event since the late 1980s.

This year, in order to raise additional funds- because of great human suffering. Political instability in Libya and wars in Syria and Yemen, have sparked a European refugee crisis. So, to help me in this effort, I will be raffling a colorful acrylic painting. With your help/generosity, I hope to raise $2,000. You can see this painting in the two images below.

I urge you to participate and help in any way you can, as always the need is enormous. In fact, the UN refugee agency (UNHCR) tells us that the worldwide refugee crisis is at 65 million refugees (mostly because of wars/persecutions).

YOU COULD WIN the 3’x4’ COLORFUL ACRYLIC PAINTING on canvas (shown here). It was created by me.
You can have a chance to win it
when you make $5 min. - pledge and/or a donation-
I’ll give you one (1) RAFFLE TICKET.
The RAFFLE will be held when $1,500 - $2,000 donation/pledges will be reached- hopefully by Father’s Day- Sun, June 17, 2018.

Proceeds, from the raffle sales, will go to the
Schenectady Crop Walk for the HUNGRY- from now until May 6-
and to CRS, Catholic Relief Services- from May 7th to June 17-

Proceeds will assist the people of North Africa; in Yemen, Somalia, Nigeria, South Sudan, and also Syria.
If interested in helping in this event and/or to make a pledge see below for more information/details.

Poverty statistics in the United States, and the World in 2016
There are 41 million people living in poverty, in the USA. 3 MILLION  are children, in 2015, 5.5 million seniors struggled to afford enough to eat, 59% of food-insecure households got SNAP benefits (aka as food stamps) and the WIC program (Supplemental Nutrition Program) & the Nat. School Lunch Program (Source: http://www.feedingamerica.org/hunger-in-america/impact-of-hunger/hunger-and-poverty/hunger-and-poverty-fact-sheet.html?gclid=CO2O9Oy-79ICFQmBswodoiQBlQ)

The total of worldwide refugees, at the end of 2015, reached 65.3 million -- or one out of every 113 people on Earth, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). The number represents a 5.8 million increase from the previous year.

Nearly 800 million people in the world suffer from malnutrition (lack of food). 10 years ago the total was almost 1 billion. This is a drop of 200 million in the number of chronologically hungry people, which should encourage anyone committed to ending global hunger.

Ÿ  According to the Washington Post"Wars in 4 countries brings famine to 20 million. War in countries of North Africa; in South Sudan, Yemen, Nigeria and Somalia) are on the verge of famine, which threatens 20 million people- more than anytime since WWII."
The Schenectady Daily Gazette also reported: The physical destruction (in the countries of Sudan and Yemen) has been the work of the Saudi-led
coalition- advised and supplied by the United States, Britain and others…”

CAN WE END POVERTY with CROP WALKS? Probably not, however, for Christians (and all other believers, e.g. Muslims, Jews, and non-believers who believe in the dignity & justice for all living things), our duty is to help those in need- which is exactly what Jesus commanded us to do- to be merciful. In fact, He repeated his plea in 1933, to Saint Faustina Kolwaska;
I demand from you deeds of mercy, which are to arise out of love for Me. You are to show mercy to your neighbors always and everywhere. You must not shrink from this, or try to absolve yourself from it.”  (p. 742 Divine Mercy Message)
To Make a Pledge/Donation, and/or to get raffle tickets;
  • Please fill out the Crop Forms - that I will have at my parish Saint Anthony’s Church and also St. John’s the Evangelist (both in Schenectady, NY), and also at my work locations: the teacher's lounges, at the schools that I work this year. Schalmont HS, Middleburgh Elem/HS, and Sharon Springs.
  • For every $5 you pledge/donate- if you like this painting- I’ll give you a one (1) raffle ticket for a chance to win the acrylic painting, shown here.
  • If you're donating by check, please can make it payable to CWS/Crop

The war in Syria is also causing a lot of suffering, here below pope Francis spoke about it this past Sunday-
the feast day of Mercy.

Pope: 'Nothing justifies' chemical weapons in Syria

VATICAN CITY (AP) — Pope Francis closed his traditional Sunday blessing by saying "nothing can justify" the use of chemical weapons against defenseless populations and called for those responsible for a suspected attack in Syria to seek negotiations.
The pope referred to news of dozens killed, including many children and women, in a suspected poison gas attack on a rebel-held town near the Syrian capital. He offered prayers for the dead and the families that are suffering.
"There is not a good or a bad war, and nothing can justify such instruments that exterminate defenseless people and populations," the pope said. "Let's pray that the responsible politicians and military leaders choose another path: that of negotiations, the only one that can bring peace."

Earlier, in a Mass focused on mercy, a signature theme of his papacy, Pope Francis has urged the faithful to not give up on the sacrament of reconciliation, especially those who continue to backslide.
The pontiff urged the faithful to continue to seek reconciliation, or confession, because "every time we are forgiven, we are reassured and encouraged."
