First appearing in the gospels of Matthew and Luke, St. Joseph was the earthly father of Jesus Christ and the husband of the Virgin Mary.
Giuseppe viene nominato nel vangelo di Matteo e Luca. San Giuseppe e' il padre terreno di Gesu' e lo sposo della Vergine Maria.
Apareciendo por primera vez en los evangelios de Mateo y Lucas, San José fue el padre terrenal de Jesucristo y el esposo de la Virgen María.

Synopsis

Venerated as a saint in many Christian sects, St. Joseph is a biblical figure who is believed to have been the corporeal father of Jesus Christ. Joseph first appears in the Bible in the gospels of Matthew and Luke; in Matthew, Joseph's lineage is traced back to King David. According to the Bible, Joseph was born circa 100 B.C.E. and later wed the Virgin Mary, Jesus's mother. He died in Israel circa 1 A.D.

Fact and Fiction

Everything we know about St. Joseph, the husband of Mary and the foster father of Jesus, comes from the Bible, and mentions of him are few. The 13 New Testament books written by Paul (the epistles) make no reference to him at all, nor does the Gospel of Mark, the first of the Gospels. Joseph first appears in the Bible in the gospels of Matthew and Luke, one of which (Matthew) traces Joseph's lineage back to King David.

To add to the problem of not knowing enough about Joseph, some apocryphal writings—such as the second-century Protevangelium of James and the fourth-century History of Joseph the Carpenter—muddy the historical waters further, presenting him as a widower with children when he met Mary and claiming that he lived to the age of 111. These claims, however, are spurious and are not accepted by the church.

Tutto ciò che sappiamo di San Giuseppe, lo sposo di Maria e padre terreno di Gesù, viene dalla Bibbia, le citazioni di lui sono pero' deludenti perche' sono poche. I 13 libri del Nuovo Testamento scritti da San Paolo (le sue lettere) non fanno alcun riferimento a Giuseppe e neanche tutti gli altri scritti del vangelo, e neanche il Vangelo di Marco, che e' il primo dei Vangeli. Giuseppe, appare per la prima volta nella Bibbia nei vangeli di Matteo e Luca, uno dei quali (Matteo) ripercorre il lineaggio (la sua stirpe, l'albero gineologo, le origini) di Giuseppe che lo porta al re Davide. Ma al problema, di non sapere abbastanza su San Giuseppe, si aggiunge il fatto che alcuni scritti apocrifi, come quelli del secondo secolo Protovangelo di Giacomo e la Storia del quarto secolo di Giuseppe il falegname-confondono le acque storiche ulteriormente, presentandolo vedovo e con figli quando incontro' Maria, e sostenendo che ha vissuto fino all'età di 111. Queste affermazioni, tuttavia, sono false, e non sono accettati dalla chiesa.

Marriage to Mary

After marrying Mary, Joseph found that she was already pregnant, and being "a just man and unwilling to put her to shame" (Matt. 1:19), he decided to divorce her quietly, knowing that if he did so publicly, she could be stoned to death. An angel, however, came to Joseph and told him that the child Mary carried was the son of God and was conceived by the Holy Spirit, so Joseph kept Mary as his wife.

Dopo aver sposato Maria, Giuseppe scopri che lei era già incinta, e essendo "un uomo giusto che non voleva divulgare la sua vergogna" (Mt. 1,19), decise di divorziarla in silenzio, sapendo che se lo faceva pubblicamente, lei potrebbe essere lapidata (presa a sassate) a morte. Un angelo, però venne a Giuseppe nel sonno e gli disse che il figlio di Maria era il figlio di Dio, ed è stato concepito dallo Spirito Santo, così Giuseppe prese Maria per moglie.

Después de casarse con María, José descubrió que ella ya estaba embarazada, y al ser "un hombre justo y no querer avergonzarla" (Mateo 1:19), decidió divorciarse de ella en silencio, sabiendo que si lo hacía públicamente, ella podría ser apedreado hasta la muerte. Un ángel, sin embargo, se acercó a José y le dijo que el hijo que María llevaba era el hijo de Dios y que el Espíritu Santo lo había concebido, por lo que José se quedó con María como su esposa.

After Jesus's birth in Bethlehem, an angel came to Joseph again, this time to warn him and Mary about King Herod of Judea and the violence he would bring down upon the child. Joseph then fled to Egypt with Mary and Jesus, and the angel appeared again, telling Joseph that Herod had died and instructing him to return to the Holy Land.

Dopo la nascita di Gesù a Betlemme, un angelo vennne a Giuseppe di nuovo, questa volta per metterlo in guardia da Erode, il re della Giudea, che voleva uccidere a Gesu'. Allora Giuseppe e Maria fuggirono in Egitto con Gesù. Avoiding Bethlehem and possible actions by Herod's successor, Joseph, Mary and Jesus settled in Nazareth, in Galilee. The Gospels describe Joseph as a "tekton," which traditionally has meant "carpenter," and it is assumed that Joseph taught his craft to Jesus in Nazareth. At this point, however, Joseph is never mentioned again by name in the Bible—although the story of Jesus in the temple includes a reference to "both his parents."

Death and Sainthood

The circumstances of Joseph's death are not known, but it is likely that he died before Jesus's ministry began, and it is implied that he was dead before the Crucifixion (John 19:26-27). Already a patron saint of Mexico, Canada and Belgium, in 1870, Joseph was declared patron of the universal church by Pope Pius IX, and in 1955 Pope Pius XII established May 1 as the "Feast of St. Joseph the Worker" to counter the Communists' May Day.

Las circunstancias de la muerte de José no se conocen, pero es probable que muriera antes de que comenzara el ministerio de Jesús, y se da a entender que estaba muerto antes de la crucifixión (Juan 19: 26-27). Ya un santo patrón de México, Canadá y Bélgica, en 1870, José fue declarado patrón de la iglesia universal por el Papa Pío IX, y en 1955 el Papa Pío XII estableció el 1 de mayo como la "Fiesta de San José Obrero" para contrarrestar el Día de los Comunistas.

The Angel Visits Mary and Joseph part 1

One day the angel Gabriel appeared to the city of Nazareth in Galilee to visit a girl named Mary. Upon his arrival he said to her
“Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.”

Mary was frightened, but the angel said to her
“Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favor with God. You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. He will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end.”

Mary then asked, “How will this be since I am a virgin?”

The angel answered,
“The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God.”
“I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May it be to me as you have said.” Then the angel left her.

El ángel visita a María y José parte 1
Un día, el ángel Gabriel se apareció a la ciudad de Nazaret en Galilea para visitar a una niña llamada María. A su llegada, él le dijo: "¡Saludos, usted muy favorecida! El Señor está contigo ".

María estaba asustada, pero el ángel le dijo
"No tengas miedo, María, has encontrado el favor de Dios. Estarás embarazada y darás a luz un hijo, y le pondrás el nombre de Jesús. Él será grande y se llamará el Hijo del Altísimo. Él reinará sobre la casa de Jacob para siempre; su reino nunca terminará ".

"Yo soy el siervo del Señor", respondió María. "Que sea para mí como lo has dicho." Entonces el ángel la dejó.

The Angel Visits Mary and Joseph part 2

Now, Mary was engaged to be married to a man named Joseph. But before they came to the marriage bed Joseph found out that she was pregnant. He was a noble man and was determined to take care of things quietly as to not disgrace Mary for he did not know what the angel had said to her.
But while considering this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said,
“Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus”

When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife.

El ángel visita a María y José parte 2
Ahora, María estaba comprometida para casarse con un hombre llamado José. Pero antes de llegar a la cama matrimonial, José descubrió que estaba embarazada. Era un hombre noble y estaba decidido a encargarse de las cosas en silencio para no deshonrar a Mary porque no sabía lo que el ángel le había dicho.
Pero al considerar esto, un ángel del Señor se le apareció en un sueño y dijo:
"José hijo de David, no temas llevar a María a casa como tu esposa, porque lo que se concibe en ella es del Espíritu Santo. Ella dará a luz un hijo, y le pondrás el nombre de Jesús "
Cuando José despertó, hizo lo que el ángel del Señor le había ordenado y se llevó a María a casa como su esposa.

FATHER JULIAN'S BLOG (Sunday, June 23, 2013)
I have always said that our dear St Joseph deserves much more attention than he actually gets. Most of his exposure is at Christmas time when his image is portrayed in millions of Christmas cards that are exchanged around the world. This week Pope Francis ‘upgraded’ St Joseph by delegating all the priests to insert his name in the Eucharistic Prayers after the name of Mary, adding “her spouse St Joseph.” I have personally been doing this ever since I was ordained, and have always mentioned his name with that of his wife, the Saint of the day and the patron Saint of the Parish in which I was serving, presently St Francis De Sales.
In his official decree, Pope Francis wrote that
"St Joseph stands as an exemplary model of the kindness and humility that the Christian faith raises to a great destiny, and demonstrates the ordinary and simple virtues necessary for men to be good and genuine followers of Christ. Through these virtues, this Just man, caring most lovingly for the Mother of God and happily dedicating himself to the upbringing of Jesus Christ, was placed as guardian over God the Father’s most precious treasures." St Joseph, pray for us!

IL BLOG di PADRE JULIAN (Domenica, 23 giugno, 2013)
Ho sempre detto che il nostro caro S. Giuseppe merita molta più attenzione di quello che effettivamente riceve. La maggior parte della sua esposizione è nel periodo di Natale quando la sua immagine è raffigurata in milioni di cartolline di Natale che vengono scambiati in tutto il mondo. Questa settimana Papa Francesco 'aggiornato' San Giuseppe delegando tutti i sacerdoti di inserire il suo nome nelle preghiere eucaristiche, dopo il nome di Maria, aggiungendo "il suo sposo San Giuseppe." Io ho personalmente fatto questo da quando sono stato ordinato prete, e ho sempre menzionato il suo nome con quello di sua moglie, il santo del giorno e il patrono della parrocchia in cui mi servivo, e attualmente servo la parrocchia di San Francesco di Sales.
Nel suo decreto ufficiale, Papa Francesco ha scritto che
"San Giuseppe si pone come un modello esemplare di gentilezza e l'umiltà che la fede cristiana eleva a un grande destino, e dimostra le virtù ordinarie e semplici necessario per gli uomini a essere buone e genuine seguaci di Cristo . Grazie a queste virtù, questo uomo giusto, la cura più amore per la Madre di Dio e felicemente dedicandosi all'educazione di Gesù Cristo, è stato posto in qualità di custode su Dio tesori più preziosi del Padre ".

PADRE JULIAN'S BLOG (domingo, 23 de junio de 2013)Siempre he dicho que nuestro querido San José merece mucha más atención de la que realmente recibe. La mayor parte de su exposición es en Navidad cuando su imagen se retrata en millones de tarjetas de Navidad que se intercambian en todo el mundo. Esta semana, el Papa Francisco 'mejoró' San José al delegar a todos los sacerdotes para insertar su nombre en las oraciones eucarísticas después del nombre de María, y agregó "su esposa San José." He estado haciendo esto personalmente desde que fui ordenado, y he tenido Siempre mencioné su nombre con el de su esposa, la Santa del día y el santo patrón de la parroquia en la que estaba prestando servicio, actualmente San Francisco de Sales.En su decreto oficial, el Papa Francisco escribió que"San José se presenta como un modelo ejemplar de la bondad y la humildad que la fe cristiana plantea a un gran destino, y demuestra las virtudes ordinarias y sencillas necesarias para que los hombres sean buenos y genuinos seguidores de Cristo. A través de estas virtudes, este hombre justo, cuidando con amor a la Madre de Dios y felizmente dedicándose a la educación de Jesucristo, fue puesto como guardián de los tesoros más preciosos de Dios el Padre ".
